Hi all, we are just starting out and am learning the hard way. But I will
need/want to put on maintenance (CD2) to our Suse, SLES8'ed, 31-bit, LPAR
system. I went to the archives but keep on getting sidetracked and a bit
confused. It seems like there are countless ways that everybody has
experienced over the years.

Mine might be one of them, so you may have heard this already. But in
case you haven't....

We have a brand new system, no RPM's on, except what may have been
included on the initial release.

So, what do I do? Init the RPM, etc...Thanks

SLES8 has a system administrator's front-end, YaST, that will try to help you do this. It assumes that your Linux image has unfettered access to the Web for HTTP access, but it can also be told to use a locally mounted CD-ROM (image), such as one of the SP3.

From your Linux image, try the command, "wget www.suse.de". If this
produces a file for you, it means you can connect to the servers where
you'll get your fixes.

You'll need to register with SuSE; they'll send you a userid and
password for their "portal" for their support site.

Once you know you can get from your Linux system to the outside world,
you can go into YaST and choose, in order, "Software" and "Online Update."

Alternately, as I said, you can download the .ISO to your Linux image.
In my case, I downloaded it to one local system (a PC, it turns out) and
then copied it from my PC to my Linux image, while we worked out some
issues routing beyond the edge of our domain from our Linux guest. You
get the .ISO from SuSE's support portal using the name and password you
would have used from "Online Update." You'll need to un-zip the tarball
and get an .iso image that way. Then you can mount the .iso within your
Linux image as a loop-back device. Then, under YaST, it becomes
"Software" "Patch CD Update" instead of "Software" "Online Update."

There are lots of ways to skin this cat. I'm sure Neale and Mark, and
many more, have more elegant procedures than mine. But if no one else
speaks up, try these two paths and see if either work for you. :-)

Good luck,
Nick
