Using a devfs style name for specifying the root device is currently
not supported at all. To do that, you need some special patch that
enables full initramfs functionality and then put a udev binary with
configuration files into your initramfs archive. Doable, but not worth
the effort.

I doubt this work out of the box before 2.7.xx kernels.
