I'd should probably keep my mouth shut, but what-the-hey, it's Friday. To the best of my knowledge, you cannot do a reverse DNS lookup using /etc/hosts. If you really want to do this, I think that you will end up needing to (1) have /etc/hosts entries put in your "outside" DNS server, or (2) implement a DNS server on your Linux box. I am not very familiar with (2), but I think you can set it up with the contents of your /etc/hosts in it, then let it go to the "normal" DNS server for futher resolution.
