1. No not from a bare metal system 
2. yes, another system vse/esa.. That is what I have been trying to do.
        ftp to the vse/esa to vsam files.. Ditto vsam files to tape and 
        then ipl the tape from the mp2003
3. I also have vm on a z800...put into vm's rdr q.. Then 
        use a rexx exec and put the files on tape in this order
        kernel.debian
        parmfile.debian
        initrd.debian
        From the
http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/stable/main/disks-s390/current/tap
e/
