Subject: IBM's Mainframe Momentum Continues

See: http://linuxtoday.com/high_performance/2004081102826OSDPHW

"In another sign the mainframe computer is coming back to life,
IBM plans to announce on Wednesday that a customer is using its
zSeries machines and Linux for a major consolidation of business
applications.

Actually, there have been quite a few. I expect the z990 to outperform the z900 and
the z890
to outperform the z800 in sales terms. This list came from IBM only this morning -
bizarrely,
it's marked "Commercial in Confidence" so I've redacted the names - they're in my
original.
This is only 2Q04 and only those sites that wish to be referenced - those who've
worked in
sales & marketing will know how hard it can be to get people to stick their heads
above the
parapet - so this really may be the tip of an iceberg:

IBM eServer zSeries Case Studies

XXXXXX - Implemented two IBM eServer zSeries (in separate data
centres) that run both z/OS and Linux, combined with WebSphere Application
Server (English and Italian version)

XXXXXX - Implemented IBM eServer zSeries 900 servers in Parallel
Sysplex configuration with Internal Coupling Facility Duplexing, IBM CICS,
IBM DB2, and IBM WebSphere MQ (English and spanish version)

XXXXXX - Migrated legacy mainframe systems to z/OS on a new IBM
eServer zSeries 800, added a second z800 as backup, implemented two IBM
TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server 800 systems (english version)

XXXXXX - Implemented IBM eServer zSeries 990 server in production data
centre, with IBM eServer zSeries 800 in backup data centre, each connected
to an IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server, with data mirroring
managed by peer-to-peer remote copy (English and German version)

XXXXXX - Introduced two IBM eServer zSeries 900 servers running z/VM, SUSE
LINUX Enterprise Server, z/OS and IBM DB2 UDB, replacing 2 large database
servers and 15 separate Intel-based application servers (English and
German version)

XXXXXX - Implemented IBM eServer zSeries Multiprise 3000 G5 running
VSE/ESA and z/VM with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, IBM Websphere
Application Server and IBM DB2 Universal Database (English version)

XXXXXX - Implenented three IBM eServer zSeries servers attached to two IBM
TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Servers (ESS) 800 and one TotalStorage
Virtual Tape Server (VTS) with 3494 3490-B20 Tape Library in a primary
data centre in Munich, linked to a fourth backup zSeries, also attached to
two ESS800 storage servers and one VTS with 3494 3490-B18 Tape Libraries
in a secondary data centre. Brought disaster recovery policies from three
different service providers back in house (English version)
