We had a similiar problem everything worked but slower. Running ethereal on
guest linux helped confirm a transmission problem which turned out to be in
the switch. Once we replace the switch problem fixed. Note that depending
on your lan speed and switch defaults, the switch may want to bounce back
and forth attempting higher bandwidth which will also degrade performance.
Set the ports manually. good luck.

Isn't this usually indicative of the Linux guest being shoved way down
in VM's dispatching mechanism?

We have experienced something similar with our guests. Not only do the
ping times increase but we intermittently loose connectivity all
together. All mysteriously on guests that have  been running perfect
just hours before...

Interested to see what suggestions people have...
