Answers to questions about performance always start and end with "It depends". Whether Intel or zSeries is the right choice depends entirely on the workload. If it's a workload that doesn't do well on zSeries, then all the discussions about VMWARE vs. z/VM will be moot. After you're satisfied that zSeries is the Right Platform, then the discussion about VMWARE vs. z/VM is, again, moot. See where this is going? Don't make your deployment decision based on the hipervisor: it's not the thing that will determine success or failure. If you would like to talk to customers running specific middleware (such as Oracle, DB2 UDB, SAP, and Websphere) on Linux on zSeries, contact your IBM Business Parter or IBM rep. They can help you. At the end of the day, I think the nitty gritty details about % this and % that (which are just guesstimates without measurements and specs) just get in the way. Talk to people who are actually doing what you want to do and find out from them what made it successful.
