i certainly agree with you that x is not a good mainframe candidate, but
it would be cool to see it running from there none the less.

Mark pointed out that X applications are CPU intensive and are best run on
Gigahertz boxes. But I'm like you, if you want to get someone's attention
show them a fancy GUI screen and then tell them it's running on the
mainframe.

"gdm" is the Gnu Display Manager (I think that's what it's called???). It
is similar to "xdm".

hi richard,

i'm not sure what gdm is, but i will certainly give it a shot. my current
goal is to get x working off the mainframe. that should turn a few heads.

One more thing. If you get Slack390 installed and working I would be
curious to know if you can get "gdm" working. I attempted to run an
x-server from my Windows machine that would connect to "gdm" running on
Slack390 under Hercules. I could not get this to work. Mark Post worked
with me on this. But we were never able to determine what the problem
was, i.e. user error!

I installed Slack390 9.1 and was able to connect to the "gdm" server. I'd
like to know if someone else has the problem with 10.0.

Mark pointed out that running "gdm" on a mainframe is not a good use of
Linux on 390.
