Hi Peter,
You should answer Linux if you plan to run under the IFL engine, VM or
not. If you answer ESA/390, your LPAR(s) will run under the "Legacy"
engine(s), VM or not again.
Notice that the options that are persented to you are not directly related
to any Operating Systems except maybe for TPF which is actually an
Operating System. For exemple, ESA/390 is valid for z/OS and OS/390, z/VM
and VM/ESA, VSE/ESA and yes Linux or any other OS that may exist and any
of those in LPAR mode. Coupling Facility is for Parallel Sysplex that is
used only with z/OS or OS/390.
Good luck.

z/VM LPAR Configuration Question
We are running 2 SuSE Linux 8.1 SP03 in native LPARs using a new IFL. On
the HMC, the Linux LPAR profiles specify âLINUX onlyâ under the general
tab. We then select âNot dedicated integrated facility for Linuxâ to allow
the two Linux LPARs to share the IFL.
We are now getting ready to install z/VM V5.1. z/VM is new to us. We
defined a new LPAR just for z/VM. Our intention is to get z/VM up and
running and then migrate the two native Linux LPARs to z/VM guests.
What mode do I select for the VM LPAR profile under the general tab on the
HMC? My choices are:
ESA/390
ESA/390 TPF
Coupling Facility
Linux Only
There is no VM option. If I specify ESA/390, I do not have an option under
the processor tab to allow the VM LPAR to share the IFL. This option only
appears when I select âLinux onlyâ. We do not have excess capacity on the
central processors as the z/OS systems are fully utilizing them. Do I
define the VM LPAR as Linux only?
Thanks for any insight.
Peter
