Can't answer that one yet, but...

Mail -- especially if you use DNS-based blocking lists and any of the
modern spam-abatement techniques -- is very DNS-intensive. Having a
local caching DNS server on your mail servers is recommended practice to
keep from beating your primary DNS server to death, and nscd just isn't
up to the task for any real volume of mail.
