Re tape handling, that's odd, because I got the same error using 2.17 as I got 
with 3.01.  I suspect I did the original SLES8 install using somewhere around 
2.15 though, and I don't have that version around anymore to try.

Thanks for the clarification about PARMFILE.  I suspected it didn't matter, 
just wanted to be sure.
