Hi Tom,

We moved our Child Welfare system from Oracle on HP-UX to Oracle on
Linux/390. We are extremely pleased with the result. We have future plans
of moving HR (Oracle Applications Server), and our data warehouse to Oracle
on Linux/390. I believe most of the tools you are used to having on other
platforms are there.

We also have plans for moving some DB2 processes to Linux/390.

You might try contacting the IBM/Oracle Competency Center (run by IBM).
They have resources to tell you whether it would be a good move or not.

Chris

Subject: DB2 vs Oracle on Suse

I'm looking for the weaknesses of running either DB2 or Oracle on Linux
(Suse..current level) on z/VM 4.2 on our mainframe (currently on a 390
engine, no lpar available).

We currently have 5 Oracle servers on Intel servers and they are not
really busy. Server consolidation! We are looking at moving them to
Suse running under VM.

I'm not sure how existing Oracle applications can be made to use
DB2/UDB, but if that is a big problem (not our application code), then
the decision will be Oracle.

However, if not all the Oracle tools are available for Linux/390, then
they might just stay where they are (or some of them will).

This project will also extend to our Microsoft SQL servers being
consolidated to these Oracle/DB2 servers.

So, I'm more interested in what can't be done rather then the
benefits.

I have a lot more experience with DB2, but I was an Oracle DBA for
about 7 years also (running on VM and...believe it or not...VSE). I've
been on the Oracle web site, and I'm having a hard time finding support
info for Oracle on Linux on the mainframe.

Thanks
