It would work, but it's not the way any veteran VM'er would do it.

Son, it's time you learned about second level test VM systems. :-)

It's also time you subscribed to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Trust me,
you're part of the target audience for that list as well as this list.

However, since someone's about to jump all over for me for being coy
instead of helpful, here's the answer you want:

Don't do it that way.

You can IPL those volumes in a guest virtual machine. You can do it in
any large enough virtual machine (let's say 64 MB or 256 MB for a test
of a minimal system). Use a class G userid, not a more privileged userid
like MAINT. In particular, don't do it from a Class A userid, just in
case you issue SHUTDOWN from the wrong place and shut down the wrong
system. Not that I've ever done that, but I've heard stories.

Log on to the userid.

ATTACH the volumes to the userid.

Issue the command TERM CONMODE 3270 -- this will blow away CMS, but
that's OK; in a step or two, CMS would be blown away as you IPL VM in
the virtual machine.

Do a Q CONS to get the address of the virtual console.

IPL nnn LOADPARM CONS=cuu

I got stuck here.When I performed IPL 233C LOADPARM CONS=0009
I got the error:
HCPCLT1013E An invalid operand was supplied for LOADPARM - CONS=0009.

Q CONSOLE showed me:
Q CONSOLE
CONS 0009 ON LDEV L0006 TERM STOP HOST TCPIP FROM 172.21.109.67
0009 CL T NOCONT NOHOLD COPY 001 READY FORM STANDARD
0009 TO ZVML2 PRT DIST CMSTST FLASHC 000 DEST OFF
0009 FLASH CHAR MDFY 0 FCB LPP OFF
0009 3215 NOEOF CLOSED NOKEEP NOMSG NONAME
     0009 SUBCHANNEL = 0003

I am not sure if I was looking at the right number.

In SYSTEM CONFIG I have:
Operator_Consoles SYSTEM_CONSOLE
Emergency_Message_Consoles 0020 0021 0022 0023 0E20 0E21 1020

where nnn is the address of 510RES and cuu is the virtual console address.

I'm doing this off the top of my head, so I may have a detail or two
wrong, but this is most of it. You probably would want to DEF GRAF some
terminals before you IPL the guest so you can dial into the guest and
log onto MAINT on the second level system.

Like I said, ask on VMESA-L, and you'll get some more ideas.

Nick
