Well:

I have the disk (FCP from switch and FICON directly attached) and the tape
(FCP from switch) working well.

I will take a look at the recomendation to talk with mcdata people. I've
heard about the port displacement (0 is 4) but we did no tried that. And we
did a CHPID off and ON using zvm not from HMC, so I can't say if this would
help but it will be nice to try. All the chpids, links, etc, were ok from
the zvm, z800, mcdata and shark but the logical path is off for all dasds
when the shark and z800 are connected to switch.

We are using the devices now and it will be quite difficult to do some
changes in the configuration now. Maybe at the beggining of the 2005.

Thank in advance.

FICON enablement on all the switches I have worked with (McData, Brocade,
Inrange/CNT) has been an extra cost feature that is enabled at the port
level. I think you should contact your McData rep and see if they can give
it a look or dial in to the switch. The switches seem to operate in a
layer
above the FCP protocol, so each port needs to know it is connecting to
FICON
or FCP.

We could not find anything on the swtich configuration panels to do something like this. I think it should be transparent to the protocol ...

Are you sure McData has enabled FICON on the ports?

Answerin all:

- No zone keeping
- No problems with cables. The shark is working if I connect it
directly to CPU.
- The FCP, disk and tape are working using the switch
- This is a brand new installation: z800 (old machine with 2 ficon
cards),
macdata s3232, z750, Ultrium Tape (LTO).

The only thing is I cannot use the ficon to shark passing through
switch. I cannot turn the logical path online.

1) Do you have zoning keeping the in port from seeing the out port?
2) I had a Fibre Channel problem a few months ago where the devices
were seen by the switch, but couldn't transfer one iota of 'real'
data. The problem was a bad GBIC. I think bad cables can cause
similar issues. Swap in known good components, if possible, to
eliminate these possibilities.

Is this a new McData FICON switch or do you already have items on it.

I have the following configuration:

CHPID PATH=(34),TYPE=FC,PARTITION=(ZVM01),SWITCH=01
CHPID PATH=(36),TYPE=FC,PARTITION=(ZVM01),SWITCH=01
CNTLUNIT   CUNUMBR=FD01,PATH=(34,36),UNITADD=((00,125)),
            UNIT=3990,CUADD=0,LINK=(01,03)
IODEVICE   ADDRESS=(F900,84),CUNUMBR=(FD01),UNIT=3390,
            UNITADD=00,STADET=Y
IODEVICE   ADDRESS=(F300,41),CUNUMBR=(FD01),UNIT=3390,
            UNITADD=54,STADET=Y

The logical path to dasd are not becoming online. The McData has
everything online and from the CPU side everything seems ok too.
