I rely on it HEAVILY for the disconnect/reconnect feature. Adam affirms use of SSH (which can tunnel your X traffic) and that's probably even more efficient on bandwidth than VNC. But you asked about "VNC to a Linux system". If you meant "VNC to a Linux-on-zSeries system" then there would also be the CPU intensive nature of the VNC server to consider.
