z/VM 5.1 and 4.4 work differently in this regard. In 5.1 they are pre-ATTACHed to the controllers so that (a) you can't accidentally or intentionally use them for something else, and (b) we can recover from errors a lot faster. In either case, your backup ports MUST NOT be used for other purposes. You can use other subchannels on the same OSA chpid (port), but not the ones defined for use by the VSWITCH. In 5.1 we make it harder for you to break the rule. In 4.4 it is up to you.
