Older versions of PuTTY defaulted to SSH v1, and the negotiation code
up to SSH v2 didn't always work right. Newer Linux distributions are
configured to respond to SSHv2 only (to address a security issue), so
you need to either upgrade PuTTY or change the settings to default to
SSH v2. This problem goes away with this change.
