Here's a wierd one: I issue the command alias x="/usr/bin/the" to set up a shortcut for the hessling editor. It works from the command line.
The same command placed inside /etc/profile.local doesn't create the alias. /etc/profile.local has read/execute permissions for everyone and other commands in there do execute.
