All,

As promised, a follow-up on our experiences getting multiple VLAN
connections on a Vswitch to RHEL 3 (and ultimately SLES 8) servers...

First off, we had to overcome physical connectivity issues: we were
required to test with switch equipment in our telecom lab in a different
building from our mainframes. Had fun with copper/fibre media converters
until the right combination was found. Other problems related to duplexing
were traced to incorrect settings in our Alcatel switch - apparently you
have to specify speeds in two different places in that box to avoid
auto-negotiate - WHICH DOESN'T WORK! Gaaa!

The most interesting find was discovered nearly by accident. We plan to
implement on a z990 but when we started this project our 9672-RB6 had an
unused OSA Express card so we decided to use it for testing. The problem we
discovered is that G5/G6 OSA Express cards don't support VLAN tagging (this
fact doesn't appear to be documented anywhere, except for a hint in another
post on this list last January). We could connect to an access port on the
switch but not a trunk port. So, abandoning that idea, we cabled up one of
our 10/100/1000 OSA Express cards on the z990. That worked after we
upgraded the OSA microcode level to 6.25 (from 6.11). We finally succeeded
after swapping some cables that were incorrectly plugged into the test
machine (also connected to the switch) that we were trying to connect to.

What fun!

I still have issues with the VLAN interfaces not coming up by themselves at
re-boot, so am keeping an eye on Martha's recent thread on this topic.

Best regards,
