... wait a minute... It's all confusing.

I want to talk from a zLinux image running DB2Connect to a zOS image running
DB2, both in the same CEC, but in different LPARs. zOS is version 1.5, zLinux
is SLES8, probably base, running beneath zVM 4.4, again, fairly base.

The Hipersocket device range is 7A00-7A0F, in both LPARs. The zOS folks used
7A00-7A02, and are able to talk to it from other LPARs on the OSA (not via the
Hipersockets; I'm not sure how that works...)

I dedicated 7A00-7A02 to a zLinux image, and 7A04-7A06 to TCPIP. I defined the
device and link to zVM's TCPIP, per the Redbook "zSeries Hipersockets". The
device comes up in TCPIP without errors. I defined hsi1 to the zLinux image,
and again, it came up without problem. I can ping either direction from zVM to
zLinux. But I can't talk from either zVM or zLinux to the zOS machine, which is
supposed to be on the same Hipersockets.

I've found the statement in the book that "Direct connectivity between the four
Hipersockets is not provided; however, connecting them via routing of any
TCP/IP stack that has a connection to the specific Hipersockets devices is
permitted." Huh? I thought the whole point was to allow things to talk together
and avoid an outside hop. This reads, to me, like I have to make a hop outside
to get between systems connected directly to the Hipersocket. What's the good
of that? And this doesn't seem to be exactly true, since I can talk between zVM
and zLinux, and that would seem to be two systems directly connected via the
same Hipersockets.

There has to be something simple I'm missing. What do I need to do to talk to
the zOS machine in the other LPAR? Is there something that needs to be done on
/ for the zOS TCP/IP stack? Is there a definition I'm missing?

Any help would be appreciated....
