Why is it hard to maintain? Can you share some experiences? Thanks.

tried it and don't like it. It is kind of hard to maintain. Also, when you
move to FCP scsi attached disks then you really don't need to do this.

Subject: BaseVol/Guestvol Questions
As we look forward to creating our SuSE Linux colonies under our new z/VM
system, we have been reading many papers. Some include the following:
Linux on IBM eServer zSeries and S/390: Large Scale Linux Deployment
Server Consolidations with Linux for zSeries Redpaper
Using BIND Mount to Create A Simplified BaseVol/GuestVol Linux Server.
We like the idea of the BaseVol/Guestvol system. This will greatly reduce
the effort to maintain and clone Linux and save DASD as much of it can be
read only. It also allows us to roll maintenance out once instead of 100
times for 100 virtual servers.
Anyway, what is everyone experience with the BaseVol/Guestvol system?
Are the scripts for BaseVol/Guestvol system publicly available someplace?
We have made the assumption that we will be cloning at least 100 times.
This is an assumption for now but we do not want to re-engineer the process
5-10 clones into it. As always, thanks.
