Once you agreed on what the server should look like, the next one will have specific requirements that were not addressed. And you cannot service the R/O disk so you must have a completely new setup for each group of "largely similar" servers. IMHO the cost reduction for maintenance is sort of right: it is almost impossible to apply maintenance in such a setup. For sufficiently small groups of similar servers you may get the same savings in disk space by just installing the bare minimum of packages that you need. That also cuts down in maintenance because most of the stuff is not installed on that particular server. Also helps to avoid security risks. We do share the kernel in NSS (not supported by your distributor or IBM) and have kernel modules on a shared R/O disk. So kernel upgrade is just a matter of making the server IPL another NSS (no serviceable parts inside the penguin). YMMV in 6 months though. -- Rob van der Heij rvdheij @ gmail.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390
