I apologize in advance if this response is out of context, I seem to have
lost the rest of this thread..

We actually do this for a number of our oldest servers.. (2 way virtual)
on single IFL..

This dates way back to some Marist Distro prior to SLES7...We found a
discussion thread that talked about how there were certain multi-threaded
function calls that wouldn't be accessed unless they found 2 cpu's (maybe
with DB2/UDB can't remember now)..anyways when we first did the testing
the side by side was nearly identical so we went with the two.. under the
"didn't hurt might help" guideline..

Don't really know how applicable that multi-threaded thing is anymore, but
we haven't seen any reason for us to kick it down so far.. (i.e. due to
lock contention, etc..)

Doug, that's an interesting idea to run a virtual 2-way on the single
IFL. I never thought of that. It is, as you say, against conventional
wisdom, but this job is full of exceptions. I could see some challenges
in terms of lock contention, though this might be a case where Linux
use of Diagnose x'44' actually is of benefit.
I expect the trade off is slightly worse performance for all commands
all the time, but a new safety net to avoid lock outs from long running
tasks.
I would be very interested in hearing what you see.
