Might be. Most likely it is. But the client doesn't have a Linux PC.
And per the installation requirements for Suse, it is not required.

I do have Linux PCs and laptops.

The problem I have using my hardware, is....

All media, hardware and procedures are the property of the client. So,
if I use my laptop, it becomes theirs<G>. (Not going to happen)

That is why I was trying to use NFS on a Mainframe Linux (Suse 8.0,
which installs fine with SMB), to do the install. That is, until I had
to give up the disk space.

I might be able to get some old hardware, that is pre 1998 stuff (all
that was replaced for Y2K). I'm talking real old. But if I use it for
a "non approved" install, I have to maintain it. It might be cheaper to
buy something new. <G>

Just would rather Novell would have tried and tested their install
methods. But there are so many methods, I can see how they would miss some.

But, based on the answers given,

no one has installed Suse 9.0 on the mainframe, using real CDs mounted
via Windows SMB.

But one option I haven't tried. I have XP on a laptop.

Perhaps using Windows SMB on XP (vs Windows 2000) will allow things to
work. Something to try on Friday.

With all the options available for installing , I have found the best to be
using a Linux PC,
Dug up an old PC installed SuSE 8.1 then 9.1 and now 9.2, copied the CD's to
a directory on the PC and installed using SAMBA and then the last time FTP.
Added bonus the PC is a great playground and you can always get hard drives
.

1. Ties up too much disk space (cost item) vs using existing CD drive (free). 2 3390-3 for Suse image. 2 3390-3 for iso images. 2 3390-3 drives to copy the contents of the CDs to the directory structure Suse says is necessary for NFS. 2. Started to do this method. But I need to give the drives back this weekend for production month end and then the annual processing. Most likely will not free up the drives until February. 3. Like anything that is new (or new to me), it is harder to do (NFS) than what I have been doing (SMB) for the last 2 years. 4. Suse says that this is a valid install method. 5. Suse says that I don't need Linux to install Linux. 6. Management says, what have you been doing over the last two months.

Tom,

Why not just "convert" the CD-ROMs to ISO images, upload them to your
current SuSE system, mount them using loopback and avoid the
Windows(PoS) system entirely?
