I took the advice and took all my file systems and perform the following:

dasdfmt ?v ?f /dev/dasda ?d cdl ?l root01 ?b 4096 ?p
fdasd /dev/dasda
mke2fs ?b 4096 /dev/dasda1

Now when I access it under z/VM I receive the following:

acc 150 t
DMSACC723I T (0150) R/W - OS

Which I guess is better than:

DMSACP112S T(152) device error
