Mark,

Congratulation! You win this week's "unnecessary use of cat" award <GRIN>

gzip -d <initrd >initrd.nogz
mount -o loop initrd.nogz /mnt
cd /mnt

Although, personally, I'd used "gunzip" instead of "gzip -d". It is just
easier for me to understand than to remember that the "-d" means
"decompress".
