Hi! Thanks for forwarding his comments.

I think there is a single misunderstanding. FBA devices always contain a single partition. They can NEITHER be formatted NOR partitioned. Formatting and partitioning is currently only supported for ECKD devices.
I built the kernel with support for PC partitioning schemes. Also, I *was* able to use the three partitions defined with 'fdisk'. (In fact, that system is running as we discuss this.) That's great!
This means that one has just to make a file-system on the partition and the device is ready for use (dasdfmt, fdasd, fdisk,.... don't work on FBA devices).
As the guy who regularly advocates "partition zero", I'm quite pleased to be able to "just make a filesystem" on the whole device. But EXT2 FS and the zSeries bootstrap are incompatible. So I am *required* to partition an FBA device if it is to be IPLable. (And, of course, most customers will use the "normal" partitioning and get two, three, or a half dozen volumes out of one FBA device.)
You can also have a look into the Device Drivers book for more info on how to get a FBA device working.
Okay. Will do that. Thanks for the tip.
