There is (typically) only one TDF on the CD. The tapeinstall image was built to read data from a tape drive (emulated or real). The Load-from-DVD function was designed to work with the non-IPLable binary kernel images. That can be the Linux "starter system" such as would be on the distributor CD, or it can be a complete image that you have customized and built yourself. This is the file that the IPLable versions actually load, I think. Someone more conversant with Linux build will have to say where the binary kernel image is stored these days.
