There was a thread about this topic on this very list that started
Monday. Check the archive for "CMS for Documentation" and "Document
Management Software".

Well, one of the managers is looking into a document management solution
for mainframe reports. This includes long term retension.

Currently, and for the last 30 or so years, the reports were put on
tape, and sent out to be microfiched. Now, they are looking for other
solutions.

1. The first thing I bought up was archival and retrieval of mainframe
reports isn't the same thing as document management. These are not
scanned documents. These are not forms. These are mainframe printed
reports.

2. Some of the big solutions (some neat stuff from Xerox), well... are
costly and tremendous overkill in their functions and capacity. It's
their money, but I hate spending $xxx, xxx on something that can be done
for a quarter of that.

3. Since this solution is only for mainframe reports, later on, I
could see the need for a full blown document management solution. So
the mainframe report solution may end up being discarded.

So I started thinking that there might be a Linux type solution that
can be used for a few years. We can get a handle on what is needed,
volume, accesses, storage, etc, that may end up being replaced by full
packaged solution later on.

Coming from a VSE shop, where we are scrappy. I don't see the need of
spending large amounts of money for a solution, until there is a need
for a large solution. When I need terabytes of documents stored, then I
think I may need an external solution. But at this time, we are
thinking more in the 20-30 GB a year.

Perhaps, with the z/890, we might fiber attached a CD or DVD jukebox
for long term, historical archives.

So, anyone know of a software application (Linux, VM or VSE platform)
that will do this, including chargable vender software?

Or is this something that no one would ever want to use on a
mainframe?

Thanks
