For now, I went with Pure-FTPD.  Solved the end of line problem and
still have the ability to have chroot()..jail...something.  Sounded
backwards to me, but prevented someone from changing the current
directory from /home/user to a higher level directory (like /home) or to
go to someone elses directory (/home/user2).

Still, worth a try.  Proftpd is also good.  After that, plain old bsd
ftpd, which is probably the ftpd package, and after *that* the
Washington University one, wu-ftpd.  I don't know if wu-ftpd has had
any security issues recently but once upon a time it was right up there
with Sendmail in terms of exploitable holes per week.  That time *was*
about 12 years ago, though.
