padl.com has some migration utilities, but they read /etc/passwd,
/etc/group/ as I recall.  I don't know of a script that also migrates the
passwords from /etc/samba/smbpasswd, but perhaps that would be easy to
hack out. The lmPasswd and ntPasswd are important fields.

I'd say ldif is the most straightforward interchange format.
