x3270 is an X application.  c3270 is curses based, it runs in character
mode.  s3270 is for writing applications against a 3270 data stream.

So, basically: if you're running X, use x3270, and if not, c3270.
x3270 is my favorite 3270 emulator, free or otherwise.  I have been
known to install Cygwin and XFree86 on Windows just so I could use
x3270 there.
