Jim,

I use Cygwin's X server on my Win2K system at work. The "blank screen
with an X cursor" is what they call the "root screen". On my system,
there is a big X in the W2K "tray". If you right-click on that, you
should see an option called "hide root window". If you have that checked
the "blank screen" is not displayed.

What I do then is use PuTTY on W2K to connect to my Linux host system. I
set up the parameters on Connection/SSH/Tunnels in PuTTY, checking the
"Enable X11 forwarding". I also set the "X display location" to
"localhost:0". Your Linux host must be set up in "/etc/ssh/sshd_config"
to allow X11 forwarding (X11Forwarding yes). After I connect, I get a
bash shell. I can then do something like "xterm &" and an xterm appears
on my W2K system.

You can also use the Cygwin ssh command. I think it would be "ssh -X
[EMAIL PROTECTED]", but I cannot remember off-hand.

You can pick up PuTTY, for free, at:
