Hi, the appldata patch should be in SLES8/SP3, as of kernel version 2.4.21-221. You could just try loading one of the modules, e.g. "insmod appldata_mem", then you'll see if it is included in your distribution. Or check if "/proc/sys/appldata" exists, in case module loading fails and it is compiled into the kernel.
See also http://awlinux1.alphaworks.ibm.com/developerworks/linux390/docu/l24add00.pdf, Chapter 21, for more details on using it and the type of data that is collected. So you can decide for yourself if it suits your needs. The major benefit of the appldata monitoring is the low overhead: no network needed, and by using virtual CPU timers, the monitoring interval depends on the "busyness" of the guest, i.e. idle guests will not be woken up just to see that nothing happened. Instructions seem to indicate a recompile of the kernal from source. Isnt' that kinda drastic? Any way to tell if that patch is on SLES8/SP3 as delievered from the vendor? My boss said 'Nyet' to recompiling the kernal - And frankly, it is well beyond my comfort level. I would think a kernel re-compile would be for something aggregious that needed fixing yesterday. Not for a performance monitor hook. It may mention where to get the patch.
