I did the same thing.

And still had the same type of problem there.
Turned out that the ftp server on SLES8, needed a configuration file
change.  I seem to recall it was CHROOT (something about putting
something in jail).  In other words, your root was to be based on your
home directory structure and not on the real root '/'.

Then I set up an FTP server with SLES9.  Same problem.  Same solution.

I never went back to the PC to see if the same solution would have
worked there.
