I was able to get to them prior to the DBA using YAST2 to set up his
LVM's and doing a format.
Can I go back and reformat them?  It seems as though the YAST2 setup and
format of the LVM did something to them.

Unless you explicitly created them as LDL disks, they already are CDL
format.

Be aware that if you want a consistent backup using FDR (and you do not
have their Linux backup extension), the Linux guest MUST be shut down
(not just idle, SHUT DOWN) before you do the backup, or you must do a
LVM snapshot to get a consistent image.
