We are in the process of implementing snIPL to do something similar. Mind
you, no zVM here, only LPAR's with zOS and SLES-9.
We back up using zOS DF/DSS and same idea, schedule from zOS, shutdown LPAR
with SLES, run DF/DSS, re-start SLES-9.
Unfortunately, I don't know if it is going to work the way I anticipate
because I haven't got around to implementing it yet.
But stay tuned, it will get done by FRI next week.

Has anyone used this in a SLES 8 environment on z-series? I was thinking
that it might be a fast way to shutdown a guest for CDL backup without the
backups being fuzzy and in theory then, restart and have it be exactly
where it left off. Of course I'd have to figure out how to have SA/390 talk
to VM to then re-ipl the guest..... but is this in theory feasible?
