Thanks for all your help; I looked at the two suggestions I got here, and then started looking around via a root login on the 3270 console. I found, in the directory /var/lib/YaST2/you/s390/update/SuSE-SLES/8/rpm/s390/ the file k_deflt-2.4.21-292.s390.rpm. (Quite a mouthful; thank goodness for the find command)
I did an rpm -I for the file, and then checked for the missing directory, and it had been built. I did an ifup hsi0, and now everything's back to normal. I don't know why the maintenance was not completely installed in the first place, but it looks like everything is working now. -- Robert P.
