Thanks for all your help;

I looked at the two suggestions I got here, and then started looking around via
a root login on the 3270 console. I found, in the directory
/var/lib/YaST2/you/s390/update/SuSE-SLES/8/rpm/s390/ the file
k_deflt-2.4.21-292.s390.rpm. (Quite a mouthful; thank goodness for the find
command)

I did an rpm -I for the file, and then checked for the missing directory, and
it had been built. I did an ifup hsi0, and now everything's back to normal.

I don't know why the maintenance was not completely installed in the first
place, but it looks like everything is working now.

Mount its disk under a running penguin with -292. Copy /lib/
modules/...292 to it. Use depmod -a -b to run depmod as if it were
being run from the failed guest (I think it's "-b", but check first).

Bring it up. If it doesn't come up, run depmod -a again and reboot.

If that doesn't work, then ask again and we'll see what we can think of.

Adam
