This is the right soloution. Also, to make this change
permanent, modify your parmfile to mark the disk read-
only like this:
... dasd=1234,5678(ro),...
You need to re-run zipl and reboot to make the change
effective. Afterwards, the command:
cat /sys/bus/ccw/devices/0.0.1200/readonly
should give you the value "1".

I also would like to second Mark's comment on choosing
a journaling filesystem for a read-only volume...
