I am 99% sure that you need Samba 3.x for Active Directory support, which is
actually LDAP support.

Subject: Samba and Active Directory

We have samba set up using an NT domain for our SLES8 linux guests. The Windows
folks tell us they want to get rid of the NT domain.
They want us to use Active directory. We have installed SLES9 and Samba 3 is
supposed to have active directory support. But our SLES8 servers have Samba 2.2.
Is there any way to connect Samba 2.2 to Active Directory?
