I know the feeling. When IBM sold our management on installing an IFL,
it was to run Linux to replace some Windows functionality. I wasn't in
on those meetings. But directly afterwards, our management was saying
things like: "Linux on zSeries can replace some of our MS SQL servers
and Exchange Servers." True, but I explained that it was by installing
REPLACEMENT software, not by running the Windows code. Then then "turned
off" of Linux. They got the impression that "Linux is free (as in beer)"
and "it can transparently replace Intel servers running Windows
software", so they had dreams of free (no cost) software.
Luckily/unfortunately, I set them straight. We still have an IFL. We no
longer have any Linux. The Linux we did have was one that I had
personally purchased to run at home under Hercules (SLES7beta). The IFL
has been repurposed to be an Integrated Coupling Facility, but we
haven't done anything with that either. "too much bother!", "the
mainframe is dying!", "Windows is the only needed platform!"
