Well, I don't see why we would need to run SCSI over IP for that. z/VM is capable of doing SCSI of FC, at least disk; not sure, though, what their status regarding SCSI tape is. Anyway, my feeling is that each attempt to bridge two paradigms, as done by an emulation layer, must come with its own inherent problems that cost some of the superiority of the base infrastructure you have mentioned. No, I want emulated 3420 or 3480/3490 directly on SCSI for that. You've done it in the P/390 and MP2k/3k, and given the generic SCSI kernel in the later VM revs, this shouldn't be rocket science at all to adapt the device driver engines in AWS3480 and AWS3420 to the generic SCSI kernel. 3420 would be better for the large capacity tapes, as it's model of "write until I get a EOT marker" is a better fit for a 300G AIT tape. > As far as I know, z/OS doesn't support SCSI at all. Another reason for implementing the above emulated tape, and adding ECKD emulation over SCSI in VM (which you've also done in the P/390... See above). AWSECKD should have all the code you need to add ECKD emulation to a generic SCSI implementation for 3380 and 3390 devices. If those two things were available, then z/OS could remain fat, dumb and happy and work fine in a all-SCSI environment with relatively small amounts of work. z/VM would "just work" (as always) and VSE could just go along for the ride...8-) -- db ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390
