Why shouldn't I write a directory management product as a Linux > appliance? Well, for one thing the object directory format is not documented. DIRECTXA is the only supported (by IBM) way to create a directory. On a philosphical level, I think the responsibility for managing the user defintions in the operating system should belong to the operating system. But there is no reason and CMS and Linux cannot coexist. You can have a Linux-based directory management application, but that doesn't mean Linux has to own and physically write the directory. All it has to do is cause the directory to be written or updated. The SSL server and RSCSDNS come to mind as useful co-processing appliances. An appliance that has basic physical directory management capability is all that is needed.
