I wish I had been reading this thread early on; I thought we were talking
about a cpint enhancement or replacement. It sure would be nice to have
one tool that works under any kernel, so other programs don't have to
decide which interface to use based on the kernel version. I think that
any kernel differences should be hidden inside of whatever user-space tool
we come up with, so that programs and scripts that use it don't have to
deal with those differences.
