Depending on the load of your x86 boxes, a single IFL may be a good replacement, or a bad idea from the performance perspective. The server types you mentioned seem to fit the mainframe environment well as far as I can tell. Chances are good that you'll end up with a working replacement for your x86 boxes in the end.
Be aware that you do need proper tuning, a performance monitor is really helpful to understand how to fine-tune a system to meet the requirements.
