Mark,
I was able to vgrename as you suggested by taking the system to single user
mode.
steps taken: init 1 ß change the run time level to 1 for single user
mode.
umount each lvm filesystem
lvchange –an each LVM file system
vgrename xxxx zzz
mount each LVM file system
lvchange –ay each LVM filesystem.
Init 3 ß change the run time to 3 for normal network multi
user system.

I'd say you need to take the system down to single user mode, umount
all the LVM-based file systems, do the vgrename, then bring the system
back up to its normal runlevel.
