And specifically in Tom's case,
I think that the presence of $HOME/.bash_profile
obviates sourcing any $HOME/.profile. This is frustrating.
The best place to learn this stuff is on one's own peecee. It's cheap,
it can be at home, and only you care if you stuff it up.
