Oh, hadn't thought of that. I don't know enough about Websphere either. But yeah, you do a lot more garbage collection calls this way, and obviously the fixed-cost call overhead is multiplied by that, but each call takes a lot less time because you only have a small pile, rather than a mountain, of garbage to clean up. Like everything else in life, it's a trade-off.
