Ouch. That sounds like serious trouble during startup to me.
Probably the root filesystem was not mounted read+write,
usually either caused by the filesystem checker running into
trouble that it cannot correct automatic, or by misconfiguration
of the filesystem table or udev.
Could you post the content of /var/log/messages that corresponds
with previous startup?
