A nice use of the du command is the following:

du -cks * | sort -rn | head -11

This will give you the largest directories in the directory you're currently
in. I usually alias this to the command "ducks" in my profile:

alias ducks="du -cks * | sort -rn | head -11"

Look at the "du" command. It has a lot of options.
